Everyone buys clothes however, no two people purchase at the same time. It’s often an enjoyable social event, as well as an intimate one. Sometimes, it may be fun and impulsive but at times, it can be a necessity and a burden. What are your favorite places to go to shop? What time are you shopping? What do you consider when deciding what you’re looking for, and how much can you spend in addition to finding the best thing for “you”? These are just some we’ll propose to the most famous figures on our blog “How I Shop.”
Devon Lee Carlson may have been seen during New York Fashion Week, wearing the coolest city brands (Maryam Nassir Zadeh Sandy Liang, Miaou). Still, she’s a Thousand Oaks native is a California girl in the core.
Like the professions of many Angelenos do not fit into any category. She’s co-founder and designer of the popular brand of phone cases Wildflower along with her sister Sydney. She is a model and the muse of brands like Realisation Par and Feel Jeans. She’s also an Instagram influencer and occasionally a YouTuber who creates content for brands like Dior Beauty, Versace, Prada, Burberry, Louis Vuitton, and Marc Jacobs. (Marc Jacobs recently asked her to design her exclusive capsule collection in honor of her birthday, which was 27 years ago.) The designer also launched a line of hats by the Aussie label Lack of Color this summer and also collaborated with her sister to create a collaborative project with Frankie’s Bikinis. Also, she dressed in Olivia Rodriguez’s “Good 4 U” music video. NBD.
In a city that is brimming with gorgeous women who can stand out with a stunning outfit, Carlson stands out for her unique and distinctive fashion sense that is reflected in an obsession with fashion and a charming smiling face that inspires you to be awed by everything she does. I came across her on an uninterested, mid-quarantine obsession on YouTube and her mood-lifting videos were like being with a fashionable humorous best friend. She’s quite normal, no matter if she’s cooking matcha in her bathroom robe strolling through Saint. Barth’s in the company of Bella Hadid, or on the road with her rock star boyfriend. She is genuinely delighted and grateful for each press release that arrives in the mail and is positive (but not, say, in a snarky way).

The majority of her posts revolve around her self-diagnosed “addiction” to shopping, with a special preference for old-fashioned pieces from the ’90s and the early 2000s. (In the actual sense, she may be the perfect patient for the revival of fashions that were popular in the Generation Z era such as low-waisted pants trucker hats, and going-out tops.) Her love of the decade began in middle school and her desire to look like the stars of “Hannah Montana” and “The Simple Life.”
“I feel like right now, I’m just collecting my dream wardrobe that I wanted when I was in middle school,” she says over Zoom in her brand new residence situated in Los Angeles, wearing a 2000s-inspired sweatshirt in her Marc Jacobs collection. Her parents are in the house as well, and her mom sometimes appears to bring back a childhood shopping memory, such as “the Kitson story,” that I was bound to hear.
“One of my cool friends, who had unlimited spending budgets, took me to Kitson for the first time in my entire life, and you gave me $20,” Carlson recalls her time six years old. “She had Juicy Couture-themed birthday parties. She had multiple Juicy Couture tracksuits. And I was obsessed with the way she dressed.”
“Her mom took us to Kitson and was like, ‘Girls, pick out whatever you want.’ And so she was going HAM. I was in heaven. I was just like, ‘This is where Paris Hilton shops, oh my god.’ I tried on quite a few things and her mom kept being like, ‘If you need me to pay for it, I’ll buy it, and then your mom can pay me back.’ I was like, ‘Oh cool. Of course, sounds good.'”
“When she came back… You go, ‘We owe Lauren’s mom $264,'” Devon’s mother adds. “I about died, but I was trying to keep my cool in front of them because I didn’t want to embarrass Devon.”
“I was sick to my stomach telling my mom that,” says Carlson. “I wanted to be cool in front of them and act like I could afford all of this stuff.” (Her mother made her take on extra chores in exchange for a reward as the clothes were not returned.)
With her earnings, Carlson can now go back in time through antique stores and resale apps and accumulate the clothes she’s always dreamed of. Below, she talks about her tips for shopping and sources for 2000s style icons from rom-com as well as her experiences of working with brands, a tendency to shop as well as style friends as well as her plans for her career in fashion.
“I’ve always loved creating the full-on look. I’ve always wanted to make the look myself with my hair and makeup, as well as choose myself a new outfit. My mom also loved shopping too. I’d like to say we were fashion-conscious but we loved everything. I wasn’t able to dive into the world of designers and fashion until high school.
“I along with my mum enjoyed shopping with my mom, searching for bargains and finding cute items. Old Navy was a store we loved, and the sale racks were at Limited Too. It’s funny my sister didn’t like shopping. She’s an avid online shopper. I’ve always been in the stores.
“Once I started my job when I was 16 at the time, I began buying things at thrift stores, as it was all I could afford on my salary, gas, budgeting, and everything else. I was able to find the best value for my money at bargain stores, and Urban Outfitters’ sales section. I was in love with the idea of thrifting. It was, in a way vintage Charlotte Russe I was looking to purchase and it was not anything worth more than $15 or $20, but at these stores, it was about the equivalent of $2. I could buy lots of things and I was always experimenting with my fashion and wearing cool things. I would drive around the city and still reside within Thousand Oaks, which is the suburbs to the west of the city of L.A. — to Ventura or the Valley and then go to every thrift shop I could find.
“When I first started to get acquainted with my partner, I would go to his tour and meet him. When he was performing sound checks and other things in every city we visited I would go to the closest thrift store or consignment shop, and then browse. I love searching for hidden treasures. I’ve never been an online shopper before quarantine. I was a fan of The Real Real app and Vestiaire app I was looking through these apps trying to discover the best bargains on certain items that I’ve always wanted.
“The first bag of designer I’ve ever bought was one that my boyfriend bought for my birthday. It was a Louis Vuitton Shopper Bag made from the Murakami Collection, and it included cherries. I own it. I’ll never let go of it. Then, I bought the Balenciaga City bag to celebrate Christmas the year following that. I thought “Oh, this is going to be a problem. I also like these to be not happy with them.’
“If I’m shopping in person I don’t have a plan. This is more of a relaxing experience for me, simply walking into the store without expectation and seeing what discover. However, if I’m shopping online typically, I have an idea in my head and I’ll enter specific keywords or select a specific brand and browse -or even purge my closet and think”I’m going to need new clothes which is why I’m trying to find pants. I rarely attempt to be specific, as I’m a huge shopaholic.
“I enjoy going shopping during the weekends. I have people that I will be shopping with as well as some friends I can’t purchase anything with since they’ll be waiting outside of the shop. I typically shop by myself. I’ll pop on my headphones, listen to music or a podcast, and walk through the shop. I like to test the various kinds of materials. I’m a huge trying-on girl because fitting can be the most crucial factor for me, or at least to me, in terms of my fashion. It might be the most fun and extravagant piece that you own, and if it’s perfect, you can sell it.
“I truly love Wasteland. There are some great designer pieces and they’re generally reasonably priced. I enjoy The Rose Bowl. The tip is to arrive early; my partner and I always take the cart and arrive at about 6:30 or 7:00 a.m. We went through all these things and had fun because it was so quiet. It’s possible to do this at your own pace.
“Online I’ve been enjoying Poshmark. It’s been a challenge to complete many things in the house and don’t have time to travel and complete a full morning of buying. I can log on to Poshmark and browse through and discover things. I also love Delso. I’m finding that I mostly buy secondhand or vintage as it’s been my way of thinking since the beginning when I decided to spend money on something I’d like to be unique and distinct.
“I am a huge fan of Versace the vintage Versace as well as Versus from Versace. There’s an old-fashioned brand known as Morgan and they’ve got some great products. There’s a girl that’s on Instagram, Real Life as Liv and she’s well-informed about designers from the nineties as well as the early 2000s. She’s just launched the TikTok platform, and she constantly shows the brands worn by “Sex and the City” and others. I keep notes on her videos and then I search many of the keywords or the names of the designers. There’s a brand named Joey and T and she describes them as being a kind of re-inventing or creating the miniskirts of the early 2000s. I had a desire to have a Joey as well as a T miniskirt since it’s the same style that Paris Hilton used to wear.
“When when I went to middle school I was fascinated by ‘The Simple Life. I watched ‘Hannah’ Montana’ and “The Simple Life” and that was all I ate. It’s like I’m trying to find the dream outfit that I envisioned as a teenager, and during high school. I love searching for things. It’s one of the most enjoyable things, surfing eBay and finding clothes.
“I draw lots of inspiration from films. I’m in awe of “Clueless,” “13 Going On 30′, and the movie ‘Gia. I am a huge fan of Angelina Jolie in that movie. I love ‘Charlie’s Angels and “The Sweetest Thing” and all the romantic comedies. “Legally Blonde is a movie that I saw it too many times in my youth, to the point that I love my dog Martin as if he’s a Bruiser. The thing I like about it is that she’s studying at Harvard and is still herself and isn’t a slave to being bored to fit in. These characters always resonated with me, and I’ve always been very in awe of these characters.
“Also Kate Moss, I admire the effortless chicness of her style. And I adore Rihanna. I believe Rihanna was one of the people who helped me gain confidence as a young person as I saw her mix various styles.
“When my middle-school years began, I would declare that I wanted to be a fashion stylist Everyone went through that stage of saying they’d like to become a fashion designer. Thus, [designing collaborations] was a dream that I was able to fulfill.
“Lack of Color” was fun. I was unaware of the amount of work that goes into making caps. I also have a big head so coming up with what feels good and looks right was an absolute blast. It was extremely in the spirit of the first two 2000s and the styles of hats Britney Spears wore. I was a fan of Britney Spears when I was a kid and I also.
“The Marc Jacobs collab was something like… It was like… believe it’s still not been incorporated into my life. The tag is the thing that got me, simply being able to see my name next to Marc Jacobs was the weirdest and most thrilling experience. The first thing I purchased was from Marc Jacobs — it was a Marc by Marc Jacobs wallet, and it came with a zipper that had an adjustable hand strap. I would wear it with the strap as I wanted everybody to be able to see Marc Jacobs’ logo. Marc Jacobs logo on it — which was really large full circle.
“[The Marc Jacobs team] said to me, ‘You’re the perfectionist. I was like”Okay the sleeves on hoodies should be half an inch bigger, we have to cut this down. …’ The T-shirt went through three rounds of changes but it’s just the shirt. There were a lot of tiny aspects that I was focused on and that’s not my kind of person. Am.
“It certainly got me thrilled, being able to do this and seeing how it was fun and the way I could be imaginative. I was enthralled by the entire process. I thought”Maybe I’ll try this again ishortly We’ll wait and see.
“I recently went through my clothing, and as I’m turning 27 and was wearing all those older belts, my pal said “You’re now 27 I believe it’s time to put away the pleather. Plether pants remain adorable.
“I recently auctioned off a few old shirts I had on the show streaming that I host through the app for shopping Popshop Live. I prefer to keep things that are high-end or are a great fit — something I can be sure of that no matter how I’m not feeling well I can wear it regardless of whether it’s jeans or a dress, and feel comfortable. I love buying vintage fashions however, I usually wear it just a few occasions and then gift the dress to my sibling or friend. Let them wear it a few times before they gift the item to their sisters. I love seeing clothes last a long time.
“I am sure that a lot of people have said this however I dress by my mood and I have to feel comfortable in the clothes I’m wearing. If I’m not, I can’t be productive. I’m also confident in showing off my body. It’s always changing. At the moment I’m sporting sparkly nails, along with the Marc Jacobs set on, however, I’m still feeling as when someone says”I need you to get to the bathroom in 5 minutes’, I do not have to change. I still love to show up and feel at ease and adorable.
“I always dress for my setting. If I’m heading to work I’m wearing a pair of wild pants, a T-shirt, and sneakers. This is still casual and casual, however, I’m not wearing an oversized crop top or an A-line skirt or something similar. If I’m out for dinner, especially if I’m with my girlfriends I usually wear my tallest shoes, a smaller skirt, and large jacket, and a T-shirt or something. If I’m on a dinner date I’ll put on something dressy and possibly an adorable heel, and wear my hair. If I visit CVS I’ll have no makeup, a mismatched pair of clothes, flip-flops, and unbrushed hair.
“I don’t feel that I’m required to impress. There have been many occasions when I’ll be wearing my yoga outfit and find myself running errands, shopping, or perhaps meeting anyone who follows me on Twitter or views my YouTube channel — I’m in line, and I’m like”I’m so irritated the fact that I’m wearing yoga clothes and sweatshirt now, and you’re thinking”You’re my fashion icon, however, it doesn’t matter. If anyone is watching my vlogs, they’ll be aware that I’m usually dressed in a robe for the majority of the week.
“I would like to get more chances to style my look in the near coming years. I have a lot to be doing and if I do I’d like to make sure I give the time and attention I believe those jobs need. The ‘Good 4 U’ video film was a long time. It took me three days, I believe however, it took me all day, every day to put everything in place. It was a blast having a set to work on and not on the chair in the make-up studio or on camera.
“I always enjoyed getting people dressed for the day and helping them to feel great.
Every prom my mom would shout at me because I wanted to be the one to do all of the hair and makeup. I would set aside fifteen minutes to prepare. I love doing this type of thing because it helps people feel comfortable and find a look that makes them feel comfortable. I let my friends keep borrowing my clothes] as I don’t buy things that I know will not fit me. I’m like, “Well I bought this for you since you’ve needed it.’
