Let me start this article by saying that as a Miami native, I’ve never actually needed to search for the best boots for wide calves on the market. Everyone knows that knee-high and thigh-high boots are a fall and especially winter staple, but I just didn’t need to own any previously. Now that I’m based in New York and about to experience my first proper winter, things are very different.
When it comes to winter dressing, having at least a small selection of great boots is vital — and not only because of weather inclemencies. Whether it is a five-inch thigh-high heeled boot or something more simple, boots will always elevate a winter look. I normally wear a wide size 11 but I’ve found that most boots on the market are not meant for larger calves. Sadly, finding a shoe that is comfortable sole-wise and will actually fit comfortably on your calves or thighs has become a daunting task — and let’s be real, nobody wants to give up comfort or style when buying a pair of boots they hope to have for a long time.
If you’ve had similar experiences, you know the struggle of spending a lot of money on boots that ultimately never fit is very much real, especially when it comes to online shopping. That’s why I took it upon myself to find the perfect boots made for larger legs and I’ve found several options that will be great for my fellow size 11, large-calved people. Yes, the never-ending pursuit has finally come to a close. Below, find the very best boots for wide calves on the market, tried by yours truly, that you can enjoy during the winter season (and well beyond.)
Best Overall Boot for Wide Calves
These white boots are my top choice all around! They’re extremely comfortable and have great support width-wise, both around my feet and calves. Not only that, but they’re extremely stylish and perfect to throw with any of your winter looks. They also were extremely easy to put on, which is always a huge factor for me.
Jessie Faux Leather Knee High Boots
Best Heeled Boot for Wide Calves
Smash Shoes is a brand specifically for people with larger feet and I greatly appreciate it since it is very hard to find my size in stock in most shoe stores. These Ivory boots were a fan favorite. They were slightly tighter than I’d like, but once they are on, I did like how they fit. The design is so cute and very on-trend. They’re also extremely comfortable for a heeled boot. I wore these all day recently at an outdoor event and never once felt any pain! They are perfect if you have a long day ahead and still want to be fashionable.
Best Cowboy Boot for Wide Calves
The cowboy agenda is alive and strong everyone! Western wear has become a staple in everyone’s closet and cowboy boots are at the top of the list. This brown pair from Amazon is extremely comfortable and just so cute. I had been on the lookout for an affordable pair for a while when I stumbled upon this pair. With a mid-calf fit, these have enough room for my calves compared to your usual cowboy boots, which tend to fit too tightly and awkward around the top.
Charles Albert Modern Western Cowboy Distressed Boot
Best Wide Calf Boot for a Night Out
These Franco Sarto boots are perfect for a night out. I decided that after I chose to wear them all day and they survived my subway commute and work-day test. The metallic heel is incredibly stylish and the base of the boot being stretched makes for the perfect fit around your calf. While did have some problems initially sliding my foot in because I am severely flat-footed, after a good push they went in easy!
Best Zipped Boots for Wide Calves
These faux leather boots round off my top five choices. When looking for a go-to boot, this pair falls fully into comfort. I had no issues slipping my foot in and zipping all the way up to my knee, which is really rare when you have big calves and there’s a zipper involved! All in all, these Torrid boots also give a combat vibe, which is great to pair with most winter outfits.
Best Boots for Wide Calves: Honorable Mention
I was extremely excited about these boots. They’re easily my favorite aesthetic-wise. However, these were on the smaller side when it came to actual shoe size. I struggled to put them on comfortably with a thin sock. However, they fit perfectly on my calf when I finally managed to get them on. If you like these, I think your best bet is to size up. Alas, the width for a knee-high boot is perfect, especially for someone with large legs like me.
