Netflix subscribers who stream shows to an iPhone or iPad are getting a audio upgrade this week, assuming they also own compatible earbuds or headphones.
As 9to5Mac reports, Netflix has confirmed spatial audio support is being added to its iOS app, with the ability to turn it on located in the Control Center. Once enabled, you’ll be able to take advantage of a “movie theater experience” thanks to the use of directional audio filters allowing sounds to be positioned accurately and anywhere around you in space (even if you turn your head). That’s the idea, anyway.
Of course, taking advantage of spatial audio also requires investing in some more Apple hardware. The feature is compatible with both the AirPods Pro and the AirPods Max, which cost $250 and $550 respectively.
Netflix has implemented spatial audio support just in time to take advantage of a new feature arriving with iOS 15 later this year called Spatialize Stereo. When enabled, it simulates the spatial audio experience for content that hasn’t been optimized for Dolby Atmos, so it should allow all audio to sound more immersive through your AirPods.
