Selena Gomez just added the tiniest tattoo to her collection of ink—and it’s also in the daintiest of locations.
As noted by People, celebrity tattoo artist Keith Scott “Bang Bang” McCurdy shared an artfully-shot video clip unveiling Sel’s new tatt, which is none other than a small cross resting against her collarbone. In the clip, which was posted on Friday, April 16, we see a close-up of the tattoo in black-and-white before the camera pans out to reveal a smiling Selena (donning a mask, of course, because safety first!). In the caption, the tattoo artist added, “We <3 Selena Gomez.”
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, tattoo artist Bang Bang explained that he felt a little nervous doing this particular tatt, because it was on such an open and exposed location. “She loved it. No pressure though, right?” he joked. “It’s right on her collarbone where everyone will see. It’s a couple straight lines and it looks easy. But I was sweating.”
Bang Bang added that he knew that this tattoo was important to Selena, noting that any religious ink usually carries a heavy significance. “Tattoos are a really deeply emotional thing,” he told ET. “When someone gets a tattoo that’s in any way religious, I don’t even need to ask. I know that this tattoo is giving them power, and I like to be part of that.”
Selena’s recent visit to the popular New York tattoo & piercing shop wasn’t her first foray into the world of ink—far from it, in fact. The singer-songwriter has plenty of other tattoos, including a Rare-inspired neck tatt, some matching ink with BFF Julia Michaels, and a special tattoo linking her to the cast of 13 Reasons Why. Selena seems to gravitate toward significant pieces of ink that carry sentimental meanings, like the date on her arm commemorating her life-saving kidney transplant surgery that she underwent back in 2017. Many of her previous tattoos were also done by the artists at Bang Bang NYC.
The singer-songwriter has been busy lately, having released her Spanish language album REVELACIÓN earlier this year. However, Selena hinted at a possible retirement from music—or at least a step back—while she focuses on other things. In an interview with Vogue last month, Selena explained, “‘Lose You to Love Me’ I felt was the best song I’ve ever released, and for some people it still wasn’t enough. I think there are a lot of people who enjoy my music, and for that I’m so thankful, for that I keep going, but I think the next time I do an album it’ll be different. I want to give it one last try before I maybe retire music.”
She added that she wanted to give herself “a real shot at acting” in the future. No matter what Selena decides to take on in the months and years ahead, we have a feeling she’ll knock it out of the park—and will probably come out on the other side with plenty more inspirational tattoo ideas as well.
