COVID-19 could ultimately change the way we dress forever, but right now that change is most evident in the increasing quantity of cloth face masks for sale. Though not medical grade, cloth face masks can prevent wearers from potentially spreading the coronavirus. Because the virus can present asymptomatically, taking proactive, protective measures is more important than ever. In enclosed spaces like grocery stores, where human-to-human proximity is inevitable, a simple cloth face mask can make a world of a difference.
As more variants appear, public health officials are saying that doubling up on masks can provide better protection. After the CDC confirmed in its latest tests that double masking is indeed more efficient, we reached out to Abraar Karan, M.D., an internal medicine doctor from Brigham Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School who has studied epidemic response and emerging infectious diseases, to ask what should we look out for when purchasing a reusable mask with double layers, or a single layer mask to pair up with a disposable mask.
Turns out it all comes down to the fit. “One of the lowest hanging fruits here is getting a better fit on your mask. Filtration and the material you are using are also critically important, but something you can do right now at home is getting a better fit. This is partly where the idea of double-masking is coming from; using your cloth mask to get a better fit over your surgical mask. Other companies, like Fix the Mask, are working on mask braces,” Karan tells Teen Vogue.
This is a statement that Cassandra M. Pierre, M.D., a physician specializing in infectious disease and the medical director of public health programs at Boston Medical Center, also agrees with. “Even more important than double masking is ensuring the mask (or masks) you are using have been optimized for filtration and fit. The mask should consist of 2-3 layers and cover the nose, mouth, and chin to ensure an appropriate barrier to the outside world; there should be no gaps at the side,” she shares with Teen Vogue.
