February 24, 2021

Chris Hawkins plays this Friday (6-9pm) in the Farmhouse Restaurant at Harvest Market.

By the time you’re reading this we’ve hopefully made it through the worst of the bitter cold and snowfall section of our current weather scene and worked our way to mildly brisk and melting. Nothing warms the inner soul and outer appendages like listening to music, be it live or online, so let’s see what the music-makers are up to this third weekend of February in 2021.

We begin by welcoming another venue to our fine fellowship of live music presenters, as the Farmhouse Restaurant at the fairly new Harvest Market grocery store begins a Friday evening run featuring central Illinois acoustic acts, upstairs in its mezzanine bar area. Chris Hawkins, a longtime singer and guitarist from the Peoria area covers all kinds of popular songs for the first-ever music performance in the newly renovated space. The gig goes from 6 to 9 and upcoming artists include myself for next Friday, with The Grand Moff Band, The Tangents, Joel Honey, Wowie Zowie, Ty Brando, Tom Beverly, John Drake and Billy Galt coming down the pipe. There’s plenty of space to social distance as we attempt this social interaction thing again as safely as possible.

Here’s a familiar, friendly spot back having music with a newly named band of familiar, friendly musicians as The Long Bridge Golf Course welcomes Mike Burnett leading a nine-piece group through some funky paces as The Big Suns, this Friday at 7 p.m. Now returning with limited (social-distanced) seating and plenty of room to make it happen, the LBGC is back on track with weekly TGIF music sets including Tulo+Eads next week and much more on the way.

Friday fun continues this week as two heavyweights in the local cover band bonanza duke it out with Off the Wall bouncing in at the Curve Inn, while Captain Geech and the Shrimp Shack Shooters take it on at Casey’s Pub. That’s some big-time boogie breaking down right there, folks. Enjoy safely and all that.

For those of you who are interested in watching live music from the comfort (and some might add safety) of your own home, there are virtual events on the internet horizon and more already embedded in the ether awaiting your streaming perusal. Area folksinger Chris Vallillo hosts his monthly Hickory Ridge Concerts through Facebook and YouTube this Saturday at 7 p.m. presenting a Washington state-based duo, Sundae + Mr. Goessl. Featuring the extreme talents of award-winning vocalist Kate Voss and virtuosic guitarist Jason Goessl, the two do an entertaining take on “jazz, pop, Americana, country, charm, fashion, comedy and vaudeville” all on your device screen of choice. And in celebration of the Civil Rights Movement and Black History Month, the General John A. Logan Museum presents Chris in a live stream of his “Oh Freedom! Songs of the Civil Rights Movement” on Monday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m.

Last Saturday, the third C.A.M.P. (Creators of Art, Music and Poetry) episode hit the virtual waves featuring more locally based poets, musicians and artists presenting works and discussing the process of how the art gets done. Episode #3 includes Tom Beverly, JD WIlson and Thornhill (Tina and Joel) doing original music, poets Lillie Brown and James Bockmier presenting their poetic compositions and photographer Ginny Lee showing and discussing her favorite photos. Remember that you can visit the C.A.M.P. Facebook page and watch any of the three shows available to the viewing public whenever you so desire.

Thanks for checking in to check out the local music happening. Stay safe and warm.
